Germanium (Ge) Lenses는 thermal imaging, spectroscopy 또는 FLIR을 포함한 Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) 및 Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) 용도로 사용하기에 적합합니다. 게다가 Germanium의 780에 달하는 Knoop 경도는 거친 환경에 아주 적합합니다. 온도 상승에 따른 열폭주(thermal runaway) 또는 투과율 감소로 인해 이 Germanium (GE) Lenses는 100°C 미만에서 사용해야 합니다. 무게에 민감한 시스템용으로 설계할 때는 게르마늄의 고밀도(5.33 g/cm³)를 고려해야 합니다.

Meniscus lenses는 convex-concave lenses입니다. 바깥쪽으로 휘어진 곡면 1개와 안쪽으로 휘어진 곡면 1개를 갖고 있습니다. 바깥쪽으로 휘어진 곡면이 안쪽으로 휘어진 곡면보다 곡률이 크면 lens가 positive focal length를 갖고 확대경 역할을 합니다.
